I am happy to announce that the FIANS 2020 fall conference registration is now open! The Board is very happy that we will be meeting at Keltic Lodge in the highlands of Cape Breton. As you may remember, it was where we were to go in the spring but clearly the world had other plans.
There is a lot of information in this post, so please read carefully. If you need any clarification, feel free to reach out to your local representative. I know that they will be able to answer any of your questions.
The conference program and registration forms are listed here for your information. Online registration is ready below. To book your room, please call 1-800-565-0444 or 902-285-3402 and make sure that you mention the FIANS room block to get our rate of $129 for single occupancy and $149 for double.
One of the complications of the cancellation of the spring conference was that we also had to postpone our annual general meeting (AGM). Our bylaws note that FIANS is to have 2 general meetings a year and there are no restrictions on the timing of them although we have typically had one in the spring and one in the fall. Due to the exceptional year that we are having from a business point of view, we are going to hold the two meetings back to back at the fall conference on Tuesday October 20th at 3:45 pm. We will start with the AGM and then move to a second general meeting.
The AGM will deal with the election of the Vice President and Treasurer of the Association. Marcheta Fitzgerald who currently serves as our Vice President has agreed to let her name stand for this position. Marcheta was appointed by the Board to fill a vacancy and this will be the first time she lets her name stand. Her term will be for a 2 year period eligible to be renewed once. For the position of Treasurer, Dave Winship’s term was scheduled to expire at the AGM in May. This completes his second term. Our bylaws would require us to find a replacement at this time and if anyone is interested in taking on the role, please feel free to step forward. That being said, the section of our bylaws that deals with this renewal is not ideal and not considered best practices. Robert’s Rules of Order – which is recognized by our bylaws – does say that term limits for executive positions should be qualified by “… until a successor is elected.” (Section 56, subsection 35). With this in mind, Dave has agreed to let his name stand for another term. Nominations for these positions close September 15th.
Our conference will be done in keeping with the provincial health guidelines. At this time, you will be required to wear a mask in all public spaces so make sure you pack enough for your time with us. Social distancing will be respected in the classroom setup and hand sanitizer will be available on site. Clearly, we all need to do our part to keep the spread of COVID-19 to a minimum and because of this, it is with regret that we will be cancelling the hospitality suite nights at the conference. We are working on a method to deliver the evening meals and the President’s dinner and are confident that we will be able to host these events. If there are any changes in the safety protocols at the provincial level as the date approaches, we will of course adjust our plan.
And finally, for those of you who register up to and including September 30th, your name will be entered into an early bird draw. Prizes will be awarded at the conference.
We look forward to seeing you in Cape Breton the week of October 18th! Stay safe.
